 Black and White Preachers

Black and White Preachers

This is the way white preachers say “God Damn America.”

Video 1. Falwell and Robertson on The 700 Club two days after the terrorist attack on America on 9/11 say that the attack on America was brought on by God’s displeasure with those who are not born-again Christians, civil libertarians, feminists, homosexuals, abortionists, the ACLU, pagans, People for the American Way, and those who are attempting to secularize America. They thus are saying that God has damned a good portion of Americans. Do you think this is “hate” speech? Why?

Video 2. This was and is McCain’s reaction to the damning comments of Jerry Falwell. Of course, we all know that Jerry Falwell died in May of 2007.

This is what one reader online said about Falwell’s comments: People take what Jerry said and don't understand the context or message behind it. Jerry stuck to his beliefs in the truth and people don't like to hear about the truth these days.

Video 3. "Jerry Falwell's God" by Roy Zimmerman

This is the way a black preacher named Rev. Jeremiah Wright in April of 2003 said “God Damn America.” This man delivered hundreds of sermons over a period of 36 years. Obama's political opponents searched through all those sermons seeking a sound bite. They finally found it. Now they are using it to vilify this fine Christian man. Please don’t listen to just the last 20-second sound bite. Listen to the entire speech to understand the context of the condemnation. With a couple of exceptions, was what Rev. Wright said historically accurate? Do you think this is “hate” speech? Why? How does it differ from Falwell’s remarks?

Video 6. Hypocrisy: Bill Clinton met with Rev. Jeremiah Wright in 1998, five years after the “God Damn America” speech, seeking salvation and forgiveness after the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Video 7. This is the reaction of the media to Rev. Wright’s sound bite.

Video 8. The Young Turks. Rod Parsley, McCain’s spiritual guide doesn't understand America

Video 9. Rod Parsley, McCain's "Spiritual Guide." John McCain campaigned alongside Ohio televangelist Rod Parsley, who has perfected the "Patriot Pastors" model of church-based political organizing.

Video 10. Rev. Jeremiah Wright vs. Rev.Rod Parsley. Obama was right. Don't blame people due to their pastors and friends.

Video 11. The Truth About Jeremiah Wright. In a time of YouTube and the media "sound bite", we are often force fed only one side of a person. This video shows just a small sample of what Jeremiah Wright has done for America! The media and their agenda have grossly distorted this man's legacy! Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. - Pastor Otis Moss,III of Trinity United Church of Christ response to clips of Rev. Wright. More than just a sound bite.

Video 12. This is a sermon typical of those delivered by Rev. Wright over the years. It is a little different from the sound bite, isn't it?

 What Is Art

What Is Art?

Art has not always been what we think it is today. An object regarded as art today may not have been perceived as such when it was first made, nor was the person who made it necessarily regarded as an artist. Both the notion of "art" and the idea of the "artist" are relatively modern terms. The idea of an object being a "work of art" emerges, together with the concept of the artist, in the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy.

Many of the objects we identify as art today -- Greek painted pottery, medieval manuscript illuminations, and so on -- were made in times and places when people had no concept of "art" as we understand the term. These objects may have been appreciated in various ways and often admired, but not as "art" in the current sense.

Painting, sculpture, and architecture were first recognized as art in the 16th century. Subsequently, this grouping was expanded to include music and poetry which became known in the 18th century as the “Fine Arts“. These five arts - painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and poetry - have formed an irreducible nucleus from which have been generally excluded the “decorative arts” and “crafts“, such as pottery, weaving, metalworking, and furniture making, all of which have utility as an end.

Every work of art causes the receiver to enter into a certain kind of relationship both with the artist who produced, or is producing, the art, and with all those who, simultaneously, previously, or subsequently, receive the same artistic impression. The activity of art is based on the fact that an artist is able to evoke the feelings and emotions that he or she has experienced and express them by means of movements, lines, colors, sounds, or written forms so that other individuals are able to experience them.

I once viewed in an art gallery a work of art by a famous artist that consisted of a 4 x 6 foot white canvas with a bold horizontal black line stretching across the middle. The price was $35,000. But was it art?

One of the most famous incidents of a painting being hung upside down in a gallery occurred in 1936 when Phantasy by Spencer Nichols hung upside down for 18 days at an exhibit in New Jersey. To cover the blunder, the New Jersey Museum Association responded that since the work was an abstraction it didn't matter which way it hung. They stated that they could only tell the work was upside down because his signature was "in the wrong corner." However, as Nichols pointed out, the work was not an abstraction but a seascape, which may have become abstract when it was turned upside down.

 An Extra Four Hours

An Extra Four Hours

Most of us spend a third of our lives sleeping. What a waste of life! If some way could be found to reduce the number of hours we require for sleeping, what a boon that would be to humankind. Now we are told that in the future the need to sleep might be reduced to three or four hours a night.

Scientists are working on a new technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which involves an electromagnetic coil that emits pulses of skull-penetrating neuron-activating magnetic energy. In the past, TMS has been used in experiments ranging from making a person’s thumb twitch to treating depression. Now scientists are conducting promising experiments to see if TMS can switch on certain sleep phases.

It has been discovered that magnetic waves can be used to stimulate a brain so as to generate brainwaves characteristic of the deepest phase of sleep. If future experiments prove successful, these magnetic waves could theoretically be used to stimulate a nap that has the restorative properties of a full eight hours of sleep. Allowing electrical waves to flow across the brain about once a second, or 1,000 times per night, this slow wave brain activity would occur for about 80% of the time an individual is sleeping. This technique has already been tested on sleeping volunteer test subjects.

With the mere flick of a switch, this kind of deep sleep would not only refresh the mind and body, but also aid in the learning process by weakening and removing trace memories, clearing the way for new learning.

QUESTION: If you could reduce your need for sleep by four hours each night, what would you do with the additional four waking hours?

Obama’s Speech on Race in America and "Wrighting" America's Wrongs

Obama’s Speech on Race in America and "Wrighting" America's Wrongs

NOTICE: A new video (Video 4) was added to this post on Sunday.

Living as I do in the San Diego region, an area with one major newspaper with a conservative Republican bent and six radio stations that daily spew forth talking points from the right-wing Republican Slime Machine, I find it difficult, unless I go on the internet, to find alternative viewpoints regarding the candidates in the upcoming presidential election. Even now, I hear and read those same talking points repeated everywhere I turn.

In the case of Obama’s most recent speech, I have heard and read most of the opinions that one can find in the corporate controlled mainstream media. I don’t like to think that I am being manipulated by the media, so I am constantly looking for alternative viewpoints. In searching YouTube for videos that offer viewpoints different from those in the mainstream media, even there I found it difficult to complete the task, searching page after page of videos. The results of my efforts are offered here.

I will not be replying to your comments for this post. I have stated my views, and now I would like to offer my blog as an open forum for discussing the candidates and the issues. You may offer your opinions and support them to the best of your ability. I encourage bloggers making comments to engage in civil discourse, and it is my hope that they will refrain from personal attacks on other bloggers for honestly expressing their political views.

Video 1. And While You Were Talking About Obama's Pastor....

Video 2. Jeremiah Wright - Obama's pastor at Trinity Church. Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. (born September 22, 1941) is a former pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC), an African-American megachurch in Chicago until he retired on February 10, 2008 after 36 years of service as the Senior Pastor of that congregation. He has published four books and numerous articles.

Wright was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father, Jeremiah Wright, Sr, was a Baptist minister. In 1959, Wright entered Virginia Union University, a historically black seminary, but became disenchanted and left in 1961 to join the US Navy. Wright then enrolled at Howard University where he received a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a Master's degree in English in 1969. In 1975, Wright earned an additional Master's degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. He received a Doctor of Ministry Degree from United Theological Seminary in 1990 (where he studied under Samuel DeWitt Proctor). Wright also has seven honorary doctorate degrees. He has lectured at many seminaries and universities in the nation.
